A beloved classic from the heart of Chinese home cooking — Eight Treasure Rice (八宝饭, Bā Bǎo Fàn) is a festive, soul-warming sticky rice pudding that has graced family tables for generations.
At Shanghai Mama, ours is made with purple sticky rice, giving it a beautiful deep colour and a naturally nutty, wholesome flavour. The centrepiece is our handmade red bean paste — whole red beans ground down and lovingly stir-fried to bring out a rich aroma and depth of flavour you simply can't get from store-bought paste.

How to Serve 🍚
Remove all plastic packaging before heating. Your Eight Treasure Rice arrives frozen and ready to heat. Here’s how to enjoy it:
- Steaming (recommended): Place the frozen rice in a heatproof bowl and steam over boiling water for 15–20 minutes until heated through. The traditional way — and the best!
- Microwave: Transfer to a microwave-safe bowl and splash a little water over the top to create a steaming effect. Heat and check throughout cooking as microwave power levels vary.
- Serve warm for the best texture and flavour — everything is already cooked, so as long as the centre is warm, it’s ready to enjoy. The sticky rice softens beautifully and the red bean paste becomes wonderfully gooey.
